Today many ministers are feeling the pinch and squeeze of inflation more than some in other professions. Traditionally many pastors receive low pay for their many jobs and duties. Some people even consider that low pay is part of the job description for a pastor. Now they too are feeling squeezed and with many people losing their jobs or getting less hours at work, these collections are much smaller and less frequent.

Ministers find it difficult to take second jobs to increase their personal income. They are expected to be available to their congregation and to be on call for a visit to a hospital or for other emergencies.

Trying to schedule a regular job around these unusual hours is impossible. A minister would also be very unlikely to ask his congregation to come up with more money to pay him. Most of the ministers today just try to do the best they can even if they find themselves woefully underpaid for their services.

When they are asked to officiate at private religious ceremonies, ministers are happy to oblige. They enjoy performing these duties and are glad to be of help to families in all events and circumstances. They also know that they will be paid for their participation. Wedding ceremonies are wonderful occasions because of the happiness and joy of the event. The minister performs a ceremony that is marked with religious meaning and traditions and receives money for doing this. Wedding income can mean $100 or more for each ceremony for most ministers. A minimum wedding fee of $200 is very common.

Today that means that those pastors with the proper legal certification and credentials can perform wedding ceremonies alone and add more money to their annual salary.
