The downswing in the economy is hitting everyone hard. Hours have been cut and jobs have been lost. Even ministers have to deal with these belt tightening financial times. Churches and congregations are cutting their budgets in many areas and pastors income is one of them. There are a large number of ministers who have to do without any raise in pay and there many more who are being asked to take a voluntary pay cut. Some ministers who have small churches depend on their income from the members of their congregations. These church members are having a difficult time meeting budgets as well. It seems that with some churches ministers are expected to manage on whatever income is offered regardless of their education and experience.

What makes it even more difficult for pastors when budgets are downsized is that they feel guilty about even bringing up the subject of more pay. They quietly absorb the income reduction and then worry about how to make ends meet at home. Being a pastor is considered to be a 24/7 job and this makes taking any type of second job extremely difficult. Part time jobs are helpful to raise extra money for many who are feeling the squeeze of a tight economy. Ministers don’t have the luxury of accepting other positions because they do not know when one of their parishioners may call on them for their services. Many wives of pastors have stepped up and taken jobs outside the home in order to help their families survive. Even with this extra money coming in, stretching many pastors paychecks still is a difficult task.

Ministers believe in their calling and they devote themselves to their church and their members. They have studied for years at college and at divinity schools or at a theological seminary to prepare them to serve others in a religious sense. This often comes with great personal satisfaction and very little monetary rewards. Even so, most ministers would not dream of doing any other kind of work. There are some ways that pastors can add to their basic income.

One of the ways that ministers earn additional money is by performing ceremonies sanctioned by the church. These include christenings, speaking at other churches and public settings and performing weddings. For many pastors today the wedding fees that they receive adds a healthy sum to their meager income. Ministers are well versed in conducting weddings and this can be a good way to earn more money.

Even in recessions, people still want to get married and celebrate the occasion.  Weddings are booming and there are many people in all communities who may not belong to a particular church but they want an official religious ceremony. Pastors who can marry couples are much in demand. A pastor can add $100-$200 or more to his income each time he performs a wedding and this can quickly add up over a few months. With proper credentials and visibility a minister can find himself with a waiting list of happy couples to marry. This is a win-win situation for both parties. The couples are happy with having the proper clergy at their wedding to officiate and the minister is adding to his income just for doing his job.
