Performing Weddings Can Be the Pastor's Salvation


Ministers are caught in an unusual situation. They are devoting their lives to the service of others and they may find that this devotion is creating hardships in their finances. Divinity schools are costly to attend and even some of the lesser known colleges and schools can require large financial expenditures.

Many preachers and pastors today even have advanced degrees in music, counseling, or Bible studies to help them in their calling. Some of the larger churches offer their ministers adequate salaries and benefits. For a large number of ministers the salaries they receive are barely enough for them to pay their bills. 

It is very difficult for many pastors to have additional jobs of any sort because they need to be on call at all hours for their congregations. This creates a Catch22 situation for many of the more impoverished ministers. They desperately need more money but are not sure how to go about adding to their income.

Some ministers have taken part time jobs and hope that their hours do not interfere with the needs and requirements of their church duties. Others are forced into considering abandoning their ministry altogether in order to find employment that pays higher wages. Ministers who have families to care for often struggle every week to make ends meet. If they had ordinary jobs they could ask their boss for a raise, but this is not the typical way to handle the situation when a church is your employer.

Ministers and their wives will often make extra income from small jobs that assist the congregation. Many wives of ministers will give music lessons. These wives also may take full time jobs in order to help with household finances. Sometimes there are specific religious duties that require pastors and these jobs pay them extra money for attending to the details and services. These include baptisms, christenings, revivals, funerals, and weddings.  Many pastors are happy to perform any of these duties for their church members at little or no cost, but are glad for the extra money that is given.

Of all of these religious duties, performing weddings is one of the easiest and best for pastors to perform. It is a joyous and festive occasion and people are glad to pay a fee for a minister to officiate at the ceremony. There may be a minimum fee set, but there are bonuses that are almost always added. One wedding can easily pay $200 to a minister. This means that a minister can add $10,000 or more to his annual income by performing just one of these weddings a week.
